Overview

Matrix is an open protocol for decentralised, secure communications that enables users to communicate across federated networks without being locked into centralised silos. The protocol is governed by The Matrix.org Foundation, a non-profit UK Community Interest Company that acts as a neutral custodian for the standard on behalf of the whole Matrix community.

The Matrix ecosystem includes clients, servers, bridges, bots, and application services. Users can chat with friends, family, communities, and co-workers, while developers can build advanced communication applications on top of the protocol. The public Matrix network is a federated network where users of one homeserver can communicate with users of another homeserver.
